Interview With Peter Tägtgren (taken from Deathbanger EZine)
This is an interview done with Peter Tägtgren, the vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist for the legendary Swedish Death band, Hypocrisy. At the time of this interview( fall 1994) I had yet to recive a copy of the new album The fourth dimension due to a delay in maildelivery (damn slow post office)
ABHFR: How would you describe the new album?
PT: I would describe it as dark, depressing, kind of mixed with deathmetal, kind of gothic in a way. I dont know, its kind of hard, basically what its uh I dont know its kind of hard to describe it to yourself you know.
ABHFR: I know, mainly I ask because I havent heard it yet. I have heard it makes all your old stuff sound kind of boring and that this one is a lot better.
PT: Yeah
ABHFR: How would you say its different from your old stuff?
PT: Because this time we tried to make the music more simple, not 200 different riffs in one song, you know, like when you hear the chorus, you know its the chorus. We made the songs a lot simpler, not so much shit, not shit but not so much complicated stuff, you know. More older speed metaltype stuff.
ABHFR: A little more simplistic?
PT: Um.. Yeah.
ABHFR: Kind of along the lines of what Grave did this time?
PT: No, Its more simple.
ABHFR: What are you doing now that the album is out?
PT: The only thing we`ve got going right now is a tour of europe. Its a festival tour actually. Its a Nuclear Blast tou, its six Nuclear Blast bands that are going to out and tour. Just for eight gigs, its going to be a new year`s festival.
ABHFR: So you dont have any American tour plans in the works?
PT:NO, nothing that I know of right now, but we want to go. Record companies want us to go, but we need to find a good tour. So its kind of hard. There arent too many bands realising albums, you know.
ABHFR:How would you say going from a three piece to a five piece has changed your music?
PT: Nothing really actually cause I basically wrote all of the music by myself, so It dosent really affect Hypocrisy. It was like this: I made a demo myself, recorded and played the instruments and shit. I got a contract of that and had to form a band off of that and you didnt know most of the people you took in to the band. After a while you find out how people are and you find out that you cant work with them. So thats basically how it was. The three of us that are left you know, we are not just playing in the same band, but also very good friends. It works out wery well. The three of us are much a like the other guys didnt like us. Thats basically what happened.
ABHFR: How about lyrics? What do your lyrics deal with?
PT: Its very much out of the body, and very reality, its not sciencs fiction or anything, you know. Like one song is about how whitereligioruses people to get ahead like dragging alcoholics and homeless people of the street and give them food in the church and then just use them until they dont know whats up or down, then when they have no need of them they just kick them out. The fourth dimension the song is about the out of the body experience, its about when your soul leaves the body and you can see your body go off in the future and you can see all the misstakes it does, and you try to change it, you try to get in to your body but your body wont let you back in. Its kind of wierd to explain it.
ABHFR: So have you experienced anything like that?
PT: well my soul is in my body, It let me in this time, but you never know. There are a lot of different things. One song is about the "Apocalypse", its not the bibles apocalypse, Its mine. There`s a bunch of different things.
ABHFR: Whats next? Are you going to record a new album?
PT: Yeah, definitely. We dont know what we are going to do with it, what kind of direction. I mean the first album dosent sound like the second one and the second one dosent sound like the third one. Personally I think we took our selves to a new level writing music and lyrics. With the next album we`ll try to take it to the next level, a step forward. So many bands realease one album then the next one sounds like the same as the first one. Thats never going to happen with Hypocrisy, I can tell you that.
ABHFR: Thats all I had because I havent had a chance to listen to the album, and Im sorry I didnt have better questions for you.
PT:Yeah, I know.
ABHFR: Anything to add?
PT: Just hope to see all the people that wrote us and buy the album, you know.
